What to Bring to Rehab

As you get ready to leave for rehab, it is essential to pack thoughtfully to ensure you have everything you need during your stay. Your space may be limited, so you should only bring the essentials and enough clothing for 5-7 days. You will be able to do laundry at the treatment facility, so you don’t need to bring more than necessary.

Below is a comprehensive list of items to bring with you to rehab.

The essentials:

  • Identification and Insurance Information:
    • Driver’s license or any valid identification card
    • Health insurance information and relevant documents
  • Prescription Medications:
    • Bring any prescribed medications in their original containers with the label intact
    • A list of medications, their dosages, and instructions
  • Clothing:
    • Comfortable, casual clothing suitable for the season and climate
    • Workout attire and comfortable shoes for exercise or physical activities
    • Sleepwear and undergarments
    • Outerwear for inclement weather such as a jacket or coat
  • Toiletries and Personal Care Items:
    • Shampoo, conditioner, and body wash
    • Toothbrush, toothpaste, and dental floss
    • Hairbrush or comb, hair ties, and other hair care products
    • Deodorant
    • Moisturizer or lotion
    • Sunscreen
    • Feminine hygiene products (if applicable)
    • Contact lenses or glasses, along with cleaning solution and a case
  • Important contact information such as family, friends, or your sponsor
  • A small amount of cash and a credit or debit card

Optional:

You do not have to bring the following items, but doing so may be useful.

  • Notepads, a journal, and pens for taking notes during therapy sessions, journaling, or writing letters
  • Reading materials related to recovery, self-improvement, or personal interests can be beneficial during downtime.
  • Pictures of friends, family, pets, etc.

Prohibited Items

Certain items are prohibited for the safety of staff and patients. Prohibited items include:

  • Any form of alcohol or illicit drugs
  • Weapons such as firearms, knives, and sharp objects
  • Most electronic devices including laptops and tablets
  • Cameras or recording devices
  • Over-the-counter medications
  • Outside food and beverages
  • Clothing with offensive or triggering language or imagery or revealing clothing
  • Perfumes and colognes
  • Gaming devices and music players
  • Aerosol products and sprays
  • Hygiene products that contain alcohol
  • Any item in a glass bottle
  • Open packs of cigarettes, vapes, or vape products. (Clients can purchase cigarettes and disposable vape products once at the facility, or bring brand-new, sealed products only and open them in the presence of staff.)

Drug and alcohol rehab centers implement these restrictions to create a safe, focused, and supportive environment for individuals to concentrate on their recovery. If there are specific items that you are unsure about, it’s best to check with the rehab facility beforehand to ensure your full compliance with their guidelines.
